Where's My Software?
So, you thought you'd save some money and buy a computer at a show or an auction? Now, you've had problems with the PC and need to reinstall the software... There is no software!?!? Don't get burned:
When looking at PCs, check out the specifications. If the system is really cheap, does it come with any software?
If the PC does come with an operating system or other licensed software, are the installation disks included? Make sure that CDs or floppy disks are included with drivers and software on them.
Don't be afraid to ask questions. Can you see the software? Is it in the original box or package? Is the CD Key to Product Code on the package?
If the CD looks like a CD-RW or CDR, walk away. Selling or buying copied software is illegal.
If the software comes installed on the computer, but there are no CDs or floppies included, walk away. The seller must provide you the installation disks for the software, along with the CD Keys. If they don't, don't buy their product.
If this has already happened to you, you can always:
Contact the seller. Tell them you want the software. If they won't give it to you, report them.
If you happened to buy a used PC and you didn't get the software, ask the seller if the software was supposed to be included with the PC. If it was not included but was installed on the PC, let them know that they should have formatted the PC before selling it to you. They should refund your money should you want to give it back.
The best way to protect yourself is to ask questions!
